Sync is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language horror thriller film written and directed by Vikas Anand Sridharan in his directorial debut.[1][2] The film stars Kishen Das, Monica Chinnakotla, Soundarya Bala Nandakumar, Naveen George Thomas, Nandhini Vinod with Supriya Rao, J. Kalaiyarasi, Sheela Vishwanath, Karthick Krishna, Hari, Charles Velankkani, Shrijha, Dhanush and Bharani in supporting roles.[3][4]

Plot
editGautham and Nethra are lovers. Gautham is aspiring filmmaker.The film begins with a dejected gautham returning in his car after unsuccessful attempt to convince a producer with his script. Nethra suggests they go to pondy for a one day trip for change of mood. Gautham initially reluctant then agrees.They pickup their friends Sibi and madhu on the way.While returning from trip,Sibi suggests gautham to play prank on Nethra and madhu telling that brakes on their car didn't work. However the prank goes wrong and gautham really is unable to control the car resulting in a hit and run case. They however escape the situation with the help of inspector mugilan and reach their respective homes safely.
They connect with each other later that same day's night through video calling app named "Sync". They join in a conference call initially starting about enquiring each other's wellness. only madhu tells she has pain on her hands. Sibi tries to pacify madhu but madhu is not convinced by sibi's concern as she has already rejected his proposal. It's then said that Nethra takes care of her paralyzed mother who is unable to walk while madhu lives alone as her parents are in Bangalore. Madhu informs that her mom has arrived from Bangalore and as its late she will depart next day morning,then her mom comes in the video call along with madhu,tells hi to others and goes to sleep. Sibi lives alone just one street away from madhu's home while Gautham is shown living with his elder sister who comes in the video call joining gautham and assures others not to worry about the situation as her husband already made arrangements with inspector mugilan with gautham giving compensation for the victim's family and their medical expenses along with bribe for the police. It is informed by inspector muglian that victim is admitted in hospital with severe injuries. Also Gautham's Sister informs that her husband is coming back from abroad and will arrive shortly. Her husband arrives with one of his female colleague whom gautham admires as very homely and informs sibi about her. Later he orders some food online for himself,his sister, brother in law and his new colleague
Though they are somewhat relaxed at the moment, Eerie things starts happening to each of them while they are connected on the call. Starting with Madhu, She receives a call from her mother informing that she had already reached bangalore along with her father that day noon itself. Initially everybody gets confused and starts blaming each other thinking it as a "Prank". Then everybody realizing that the person who arrived earlier in the video call was not madhu's mother. Sibi realizing that madhu is in panic immediately rushes to her home which is in next street while still connected on video call. on reaching her home and going inside her room, he switches to the camera to front mode and everybody are in utter shock realizing that somehow he reached his own room instead of madhu's room. They realize they are how somehow trapped from the outside world. Initially nethra who informed the group she has felt somebody touching her shoulder now confirms its definitely a hand. Nethra rushes to see her mom on sibi's advice and is in shock seeing that her seemingly paralyzed mother who is on a wheelchair is now walking back and forth with her eyes turning white. Nethra tries to call her mother but there is no response . Everybody now realizes that its not a prank and indeed they are haunted by a spirit. Gautham immediately calls back to inspector mugilan, However its picked by another inspector, He informs that inspector mugilan died just one hour before in a hit and run road accident. Also he scolds gautham for not picking up mugilan's call earlier. He further informs to the group that the hit and run's victim name is "Charu" and she had died 2 hours before due to multiple injuries and informs gautham that he mailed the details. The group asks gautham to check his mail. Upon checking mail, Gautham is shocked as the Photo of charu is same as the person who visited his home as his brother in law's colleague . Gautham realizes that he is also trapped when he tries to knock his sister's room door, but cannot open the door but only can hear the voice not to disturb her. Finally when he opens the door he sees just an empty room. Nethra urges him to leave his sister's room immediately and come back to his room
The group confirms that they are haunted by Charu's Spirit. They plan to escape from their respective homes in order to escape from the spirit's trap.Madhu suddenly starts acting weird and explains to sibi she too loved him and want to propose him on his birthday one year back, and she visited him to his home and also explains the door was open . however Sibi stops madhu intervening that he is not surprised by madhu's rejection. However he is surprised that madhu usually stammers but suddenly she spoke without stammering. Then Madhu's eyes turn white and the group confirms that Madhu is possessed by Charu. The possessed madhu asks Gautham to check on his sister. Gautham rushes to his sister's room, in the hall he witness his pregnant sister carrying a demonic looking child in her hand. Nethra and sibi asks him to leave Immediately. Gautham through the video call then confronts Charu who is in madhu's body to take his life alone and leave others. However, Charu makes the possesed madhu cover herself in a plastic cover and makes her to self tie by rope and chokes to death while still being on the video call. Others are unable to bear this. Everybody cries. Sibi is still in shock and unable to accept that madhu passed away, He confesses to gautham and nethra that last year during his birthday one of his college junior named varsha who already had a crush him and came to visit him for some project work. Since he was drunk, he was unaware in his senses, Varsha utilized the opportunity and they both made love and he confirms that madhu would have witnessed it since the door was open & he could sense someone seeing them during their love making. Sibi realizes this was the reason for madhu keeping distance from him. Just after his confession,he Receives a call from Madhu's Landline number. Sibi and nethra advises Sibi not to attend the call. But Sibi refuses and attends the call telling that madhu is still alive assuming madhu escaped from charu, to his eyes he could not see madhu in the call. But madhu's corpse still is visible in the call. Despite warning from gautham and nethra he goes out of his house to "save" madhu and while crossing the road he is hit and run by a vehicle and falls dead on the road. His phone gets stolen by someone and gets disconnected from the call by that person. Gautham and nethra are unable to bear both the losses. Gautham asks nethra to disconnect madhu from the call as her corpse is still seen in the call. Nethra disconnects madhu from the call.
Gautham realizes both himself and nethra are going to die soon. So he proposes nethra with a ring as it was nethra's longtime wish to get married to gautham but gautham kept on refusing earlier. Nethra accepts it. They hear a door banging sound in nethra's room. Nethra opens the door and sees a spirit. Gautham orders nethra to escape immediately and he too tries to escapes his home. However Gautham is caught by Charu's spirit choking him to death and dragging his body covered with blood over the floor. Nethra then tries to escape her house comes out and starts her car, However a spirit which is sitting in backseat strangles her and chokes her as well to death .All these events are uploaded in Nethra's youtube channel called Sync with caption that charu lives forever.
After death of nethra,the audience are shown the team of the movie except the heroine Nethra in an interview with film reviewer Karthick Krishna. Its revealed that whatever we witnessed till now was the script of their movie and they indeed went for Pondy trip and while returning they witness this hit and run accident and it was not actually them who did the hit and run, Since they witnessed everything in detail, they go ahead to proceed with this script, act it by themselves and release it in their youtube channel directly as online movie as they dont get any producer for their script. The movie becomes viral and gathers lot of views and making them famous in the process. They also get into trouble from the police as charu's case is still going on and police are unable to conclude the case. Gautham gets arrested for releasing the movie in youtube without any prior permissions as the case is not yet complete. He is bailed out later. However they mention that the details of "charu" is real and the online community believes charu still exist as a spirit and even "Justice for charu" page is created.
The team bids goodbye to Karthick Krishna , After some days, Gautham goes live on his instagram channel and answers some questions from his followers regarding the script and regarding charu too. while answering he sees comments from Madhu,sibi and Nethra as well and tells them hi. He then receives a delivery from swiggy person saying that order is name of "charu" and gives the same menu what Charu orders in their script. Gautham asks his friends to stop pranking on him and even praises the delivery guy as " method acting " as he is acting perfectly as per the script. But the delivery guy before leaving says that gautham did a big mistake by confessing to the whole world and made them believe that gautham did it though charu really didn't know who killed her, but gautham through his scripted film made charu too believe that Gautham is the one who did it though he didn't do it really. Gautham then is frightened and sees a red color light flashing in his room. The comments secion in his instagram live asks him to run away and not enter the room as charu's spirit is for real. But he enters and sees a corpse lying in stretcher and the corpse waking up and approaching towards him indicating that Gautham would have been killed in real life too by the spirit!.

editThe film was produced by V. Sridharan and Vikas Anand Sridharan under the banner of Mongoose Studios, while it was co-produced by K. Padmanabhan. The cinematography was done by Shivram P. K. and edited by R. Manu Kathiresan. The trailer was released on 12 July 2023.[5]

Jayabhuvaneshwari B of Cinema Express gave it 1.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Although filled with potential, Sync chooses to take the road always taken, when it comes to storyline".[8] Thinkal Menon of OTTplay gave it 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Sync is a sincere attempt aided by dedicated performances from lead actors. The predictability factor mars its prospects of becoming a taut horror thriller".[9]
