Swat lynching incident

On 20 June 2024 a tourist was beaten to death by a mob in the town of Madyan in the Swat district of Pakistan. This incident happened when the man was accused of desecrating the Quran. The police were trying to protect the man from the large group.[1]

The incident

The man was dragged from the police station and killed by the mob. A crowd had gathered after the man was accused of desecrating the Quran.[1] The mob also set fire to a police station.[2]

Police response

The police initially rescued the man from the mob and took him to Madyan police station. However, announcements from the mosque's loudspeakers asked locals to come out. Due to which the mob stormed the station. Police detained him for 40 minutes, during which he denied the blasphemy claims.[3]

Investigation

The government has issued a notification to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to find out the facts surrounding the incident. The police have detained 23 people and shifted them to an unknown location for investigation.[3]

Criticism and aftermath

A report by a federal agency has revealed the negligence of the police in this case.[4][5] The report said that it turned out to be a serious mistake by the law enforcement agencies to transfer the suspect to Madyan police station.[4][5] The report also stated that the SHO of the area neither took guidance from the local higher authorities nor ensured his safety by taking the accused to an unknown location.[3][5]
