History

edit

The name Suramadu derby appeared even before the match between the two teams was held. In mid-April 2017, these two clubs played a friendly match.[4] Many posters are spread on social media with the words "derbi Suramadu" (Suramadu derby) as the headline.[5] So this term was then used for the next meeting between the two teams.[6]

In contrast to Indonesian football rivalries or derbies which are usually filled with lengthy feuds and violence, in the Suramadu derby the supporters of both teams have a friendly relationship and have never had a record of disputes, You could even call the match between these two teams the East Java Brotherhood derby.[7] This term also distinguishes it from a fierce match full of hatred and causing many casualties Super East Java Derby between Persebaya and Arema based in Malang Regency.[8]

Persebaya has fanatical supporters who are one of the 4 teams with the largest group of supporters in Indonesia. They are known as Bondho Nekat (Bonek), who are known for their anarchic actions every time they visit their opponent's home ground. This term first appeared in the newspaper published by Jawa Pos in 1988.[10] Where these Persebaya supporters were the pioneers of awaydays for other supporters of Indonesian clubs for the first time.[11]
