St. George Street (St. Augustine)

St. George Street is a major pedestrian road in St. Augustine, Florida, United States. It extends from the old city gates next to the Castillo de San Marcos to the end of the peninsula at South Street.[1]

History

The street was originally constructed when St. Augustine was founded in 1565 but has been repaved multiple times over the centuries.[2][3]

There are numerous notable sites and buildings located on this street including the Ortega House, Sánchez de Ortigosa House, Marin-Hassett House, Casa del Hidalgo, Benet Store, Cubo Line, Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, De Mesa-Sánchez House, and Rodríguez House.[4]

The street is 1 mile long and has been called St. Augustine's "main street".[5]
