Shuying Li

Shuying Li (Chinese: 李姝颖; pinyin: lǐ shūyǐng; born November 24, 1989)[1] is a Chinese-American composer and educator known for her work in contemporary classical music.

Early life and education

Shuying Li was born and raised in China. She earned a bachelor's degree in music composition from the University of Hartford Hartt School in 2013.[1][2] Li completed her master's degree in music composition in 2015 and her doctoral degree in 2018, both at the University of Michigan.[1]

Career

Li’s compositions have been performed by various ensembles, including the Seattle Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.[3] Her piece Out Came the Sun was performed at Carnegie Hall in 2017 with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.[4][5][6] She has also re-orchestrated Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11,[7] and created arrangements of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 for performances in the United States and Asia.[8] Her orchestral work Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was performed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra as part of the Edward T. Cone Composition Institute.[9][10]

Li's composition The Last Hive Mind (2020) is inspired by the TV series Black Mirror, addressing themes of artificial intelligence and human emotions.[11] She composed Luminance (2023), which premiered with "The President’s Own" (United States Marine Band) and was later performed by the UC Davis Concert Band.[12][13][14][15][16] Li also composed Kung Fu, a work exploring various styles of Kung Fu.[17]

In 2017, Li founded the Four Corners Ensemble, an international group focused on cultural exchange through music.[18][19] The ensemble's album World Map features her compositions, including "American Variations" and "Matilda's Dream".[20][21][22]

Li established Operation Opera in 2018, a festival that features contemporary chamber operas and art songs, held at institutions such as the University of Michigan, Gonzaga University,[23][24] and California State University, Sacramento.[25]

Li participated in the Composer's Sandbox residency at Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2023, collaborating with the Interlochen Arts Academy Wind Symphony.[26] She has served as a faculty member at Gonzaga University[27] and is currently an assistant professor of music at California State University, Sacramento, where she teaches music composition.[28][29]
