Shashikant Garware (born 5 November 1934) is an Indian Industrialist, Philanthropist, and the founder Chairman and Managing Director of the Garware Hi-Tech Films Limited (formerly known as Garware Polyester Limited). He is considered as the doyen of polyester revolution in Indian which he embarked upon in June 1957.[1]

Early Life and Education

Shashikant Garware was born in Bombay (now Mumbai)on November 5, 1934. He is the son of Padma Bhushan Abasaheb Garware[2]. After completing his basic education, he went to London to pursue further education at Dulwich College, and then Business Management at the University of Edinburg, UK. In 2022, Mumbai University conferred an honourary D. Litt. Degree for his outstanding contributions in the polyester industry and philanthropics ervices to society.


Career

After completion of his higher studies in United Kingdom in 1951, he returned to India and joined his father at Garware Motors Ltd., which was the first of a kind in dealing in foreign cars in India.Then after,he got involved with his father in his new and innovative venture of polyester films in 1957, Garware Polyester Ltd now known as Garware Hi-Tech Films Ltd.[3] (GHFL), and his acumen and diligence brought a revolution in Indian polyester films.The most significant achievement of Shashikant Garware has been his foresightedness in bringing high and latesttechnology toIndia in 1976 and thereafter, U.V. Stabilized Polyester Film in1982. The U.S. Patent Authority issued a patent for this product because of its efficiency and energy saving. Garware Polyester Films now known as Garware Hi-Tech Films Ltd. (GHFL) started manufacturing high-tech polyester products in the field of electrical insulation, yarn, packaging and a modern robotic injection moulding plant formagnetic tapes for Audio Tapes and Video Tapes,the only source of watching movies at home, Garware Video Cassettes (GVC), at Waluj, Aurangabad, in 1976 and then at Nashik to manufacture Metallized Film, Metallic Yarn, Packaging Tracing and Drafting Film and a Coating Plant for high tech films in 1987.[4]

Philanthropy

Garware Charitable Trust was established in 1962, which is working tirelessly for the sake of humanity under the guidance of Shashikant Garware. The Trust is making charitable donations for the number of education institutions and extending helping hand and financial support to various hospitals and healthcare centres for the betterment of society. For the promotion of sports financial aid was extended by Garware Trust to BCA, Bombay Cricket Association, BCA has named the club house and the members pavilion of Wankhede Stadium as Garware Club House. [5] Under the guidance of Shashikant Garware, the Garware Community Centre was established in the year 1993 at Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar). This community centre supports and serves the local community in and around the district in areas like Education, Sports and Games, Health, Women Empowerment, Rural Development, Environment and Natural Resources, Social Security, Cultural activities, etc. To facilitate and promote sports and cultural activities by people in and around Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar) financial help was given to Aurangabad Municipal Corporation to develop the Stadium in MIDC Chikalthana Area and it is known as Garware Stadium.[6]

The company is the pioneer and leader in manufacturing speciality films, these films are meant for B2B and B2C segments. In B2B, the company hasPolyesterand shrink films for flexible packaging industries and for electrical and insulation industries. In B2C, it has Sun Control Films, Window Films, Architectural Films, and Paint Protection Films.[7] Shashikant Garware has taken the fellowships of the Institute of Export, UK, and Great View Real Estates Private Ltd. He was a Director on the Central Board of the State Bank of India and Life Insurance Corporation of India. He was also an Honorary Consul General of Turkey for their Western India Office, and President of Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry during.[8]

In 2022, Shashikant Garware was conferred an honorary D.Litt. degree by the Hon. Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of Mumbai Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari. He was awarded Gold Sheild for Import Substitution by the Government of India in 1981. Was awarded Plexconcil,Top Exporter’s Award by the Government of Indiafor GHFL for the export of high-tech polyester films for more than three decades consecutively.[9]
