Early life and education

edit

Rafie studied music at the Tehran University of Art, where he was mentored by Sharif Lotfi and Kiawasch Saheb-Nassagh. In 2011, he moved to Italy to further his studies at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Rosario Mirigliano. He later attended the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, studying under Ivan Fedele, and graduated with top marks in 2018. Rafie also participated in masterclasses led by renowned composers such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Tolibkhon Shakhidi, and Giacomo Manzoni.[1][2][3][4]

Career and works

edit

Rafie is known for his compositions that blend influences from literature, folk music and scientific-mathematical notions such as chaos theory. His work often explores the intricacies of memory, archetypes, and the perception of time, aiming to create music that feels both ancient and contemporary.[1]

Rafie’s compositions have been performed worldwide, including at prestigious venues like the Parco della Musica in Rome, the Helsinki Musica Nova Festival[5], and the New Music Miami Festival[6]. His music has been interpreted by various ensembles and soloists, such as the Ensemble Contemporanea di Parco della Musica, the Kokonainen-Musequal Strings Ensemble[7], Ensemble Dissonanzen[8] and clarinetists Paolo Ravaglia and Daniele Dian.[2]

In 2021, Rafie won the Musequal Composition Competition[9], earning the title of Composer-in-Residence at the Kokonainen-Musequal Festival in Finland from 2022 to 2024[7][10]. His work has also received numerous accolades, including the "Adriana Giannuzzi" study prize in 2013 and the first prize at the Ennio Porrino International Composition Competition in 2020[1][2][11].

His works are also published by the Italian publishing house Ermes 404[12].
