Life and Work

Richard Straub was born in Steyr, Upper Austria in 1946. After completing his studies in law, he initially worked in the Austrian nationalized industry at Alpine Mountain AG.

In 1973, he joined IBM and developed his career with the company. He held various positions within IBM, including the responsibility of building up the IBM PC business in Austria and serving as the assistant general manager PC for IBM Europe, Middle-East, and Africa based in Paris. Straub later assumed the role of regional director for Eastern Europe.

In 1994, Straub was appointed as the global head of IBM internal education, focusing on sales, marketing, and industry training. He held this position until 1996 when he became the IBM Chief Learning Officer, based in White Plains and Paris.

In 2001, he transitioned into a line management role as the European head of a global innovation unit called Learning Solutions.[4] After 32 years he retired from IBM.

Throughout his tenure at IBM, Straub represented the company in various industry initiatives with the European Commission. He served as the chair of the Career Space Consortium, which focused on future ICT skills, and the eLearning Industry Group, now known as the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG).

Additionally, in 2005, he presided over the Open Innovation Strategy and Policy Group (OISPG).[5]

Since 2006, Straub has been a self-employed "portfolio worker" with part-time leadership roles in international nonprofit organizations.

He served as a member of the executive team at the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and held the position of secretary general of the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG). He also became an advisor to the chairman of IBM Europe.[3]

Peter Drucker Society Europe

edit

In 2009, Straub founded the Peter Drucker Society of Austria, an organization dedicated to honoring and promoting the ideas and teachings of management pioneer Peter F. Drucker. Under his direction, the society organized the first "Global Peter Drucker Forum" in Vienna.[6][7][8]

In 2010, he assumed the role of president of the newly established Peter Drucker Society Europe (PDSE). The forum has since become recognized as a prominent management conference,[9] forming strategic partnerships with prominent entities such as the Harvard Business Review, the Financial Times, and the City of Vienna.[10]

Honors and awards

edit

Straub was awarded the Heinz von Foerster Prize in 2012 for his work in applying cybernetics to organizations.[3]

In 2019, Straub received the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, acknowledging the impact of the Drucker Forum.[11][12]
