Background

edit

In response to the capture of Silves after the siege of Silves (1189) and the Alvor massacre by King Sancho I of Portugal and the Crusaders[1], Almohad Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf launched a raid on Lisbon in 1189, This raid was a direct reaction to the aggressive expansion of Christian forces in the Iberian Peninsula.[2]

The raid

edit

In 1189, Almohad Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf launched a coordinated raid on Lisbon, The operation was marked by a violent and intense assault on the city, during which Almohad forces conducted a massacre of the male population.[3] Additionally, approximately 3,000 women and children were captured and enslaved. The raid involved extensive military engagement and substantial casualties, underscoring the severity of the Almohad response to the Christian advances in the region.[2][4][5][6]

Aftermath

edit

Following the raid on Lisbon in 1189, Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf embarked the Almohad campaign against Portugal (1190-1191). As part of this campaign, Abu Yaqub’s forces successfully captured Silves and other territories.[6]
