Scope of Portal

I would like to assist in the creation of this portal; however, I wanted to make sure I understand the scope of it. For ancient Japan, would it involve pre-historical, pre-Heian Period, or pre-Shoganate? I was wondering if there was a general consensus on this. --JadeFox (talk) 05:08, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Well... I was actually going to pull this or hide it with a rename... When I first created I didn't really think it through - I was thinking it'd be the one stop shop for pre-Restoration Japan. Until I realised that Ancient Japan as a category is strictly defined in terms of timing. So perhaps a rename would be the first step? Is Ancient Japan general enough as a title to cover all periods? I don't think it should cover pre-historic (that's Archaeology/Anthropology and away from the History side of things I guess is how I feel) or anything past the Tokugawa Shoganate/modernisation/Restoration era as that's Modern History.

The second problem I've discovered is that in Category: Ancient Japan, there is little in the way of decent articles - no FA class, nothing above a B that I've found. That and my speciality in that sense is Sengoku Jidai era Japan which means I don't have readily available book sources for Ancient Era, just net stuff, so it's hard to improve stuff. How would you envisage a portal with this title JadeFox? It's a solo project so far, and all opinions welcome - no one in the herd controls the herd :)Akitora (talk) 10:05, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Well after hearing your points, my initial reaction is to agree with a rename. I liked the name of Traditional Japan portal. I feel this would give focus it on the Feudal Era most. I'd need some opinions on the name though since I'd also like to include the Heian period too. Technically, the Heian period is Classical Japan. I'm not a professional Japanese historian, but I'd rather avoid getting bombarded with messages regarding that technicality. I also think Classical and Traditional Japan is rather lengthy for a title. Traditional Japan would also definitely keep it pre-restoration as well. I didn't know if you originally envisioned going back as far as the Yayoi period though.

Also, I do have some personal reference materials ranging from the Heian period through the Tokugawa Shogonates. It's nothing to go wild about, but I think it could help. I don't have a lot of stuff pre-Heian so assisting with any topics prior to that might require me to dust off my library card. -JadeFox (talk) 22:03, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm the same with references - nothing to go wild about, too specialised in most cases. How does The Japanese Ancient History Portal sound? Japanese for obvious reasons. Ancient History as the topic (as opposed to Modern History). Then within the portal we can switch it down to the different periods - Prehistoric (if we have to), Ancient, Classical, Feudal etc. However I do agree with you on the name length - Traditional Japan is shorter and flows better, however, I like you, am a bit concerned about the connotations re: technicality.
