edit- 1814 – George Stephenson puts his first steam locomotive in service, for a coal mine.
- 1832 – A cable snaps on an incline of the Granite Railway causing one of the first rail transport related fatalities in the United States.[1]
20th century
edit- 1901 – The Hull Electric Railway officially begins regular service over the Interprovincial Bridge between Ottawa and Aylmer.[2]
- 1911 – Canadian Northern Railway (CNOR) purchases the right-of-way and assets of the defunct Carillon and Grenville Railway, the last broad gauge railroad (at 5 ft 6 in / 1,676 mm) in North America, to become part of CNOR's Montreal-Ottawa mainline.[3]
- 1953 – The New York City Subway begins using tokens for passenger fares.[1][4]
- 1958 – Pacific Great Eastern Railway completes construction of the line to Fort St. John, British Columbia.[3]
- 1967 – Construction begins in San Francisco, California, on the Market Street Subway.[1]
- 1980 – Two trains collide on a single track between Groningen and Roodeschool, near Winsum, Netherlands, resulting in 9 deaths and 21 injured.
- 1987 – Indian Railways installs its first solid state interlocking at Srirangam, India.[5]
- 1995 – A bombing in Paris RER B station Saint-Michel Notre-Dame kills 8 and injures more than 200. The bombing was attributed to the Algerian Armed Islamic Group.
21st century
edit- 2004 – Thieves steal two brass handles and four copper pipes from the Fairy Queen steam locomotive in New Delhi, India.[6]
