• 1902 – The Vale of Rheidol Railway in Wales starts passenger services.
• 1939 – Train D180 collides with the delayed and overcrowded train D10 at Genthin, Germany, killing 278 and injuring 453; this accident results in the highest number of injuries of all rail accidents in Germany.
