• 1833 – Richard Trevithick, English inventor and steam locomotive builder, dies (b. 1771).
• 1877 – James P. Kirkwood, designer of Starrucca Viaduct, dies (b. 1807).
• 1893 – The John Bull (pictured), the world's oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, arrives in Chicago, Illinois, for the World's Columbian Exposition after traveling under its own power from Jersey City, New Jersey.
• 2004 – In the Ryongchŏn disaster, a flammable cargo explodes at the railway station in the town of Ryongch'ŏn, North Korea, near the border with China; the explosion occurs only a few hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong-il passes through the station en route back to the capital from a secret meeting in China.
