The Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) is the parent regiment for regular infantry battalions of the Australian Army and makes up the majority of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. The RAR was formed as the Australian Regiment in November 1948 and received its 'Royal' prefix in October 1949. Elements from the regiment have served in several major conflicts and it reached its peak strength during the Vietnam War when it comprised nine battalions. The RAR currently consists of seven battalions.
