Portal:College football/Selected content/Nominations

The selected content for the College football Portal is rotated on a periodic basis. To be nominated, an article must be of high quality (at least a B-class on the assessment scale) and must relate to the topic of college football. Articles of GA or FA class do not need to go through the nomination process, just add them to the approved nomination section. A picture must be of high quality and high resolution (at least 800x600 or 600x800) and must also relate to a topic of college football. In addition, a picture must have a free-use license (no fair use images). We will rotate between articles on a specific team or recent player/coach and articles on a concept, play, tradition, or historic figure. During the college football season (from the first week of September to the last week of December), articles will be rotated on a weekly basis. During the offseason, articles will be rotated on a monthly basis.

Nominations for Selected article edit

William H. Lewis edit

(Reason for nominating) Significant and interesting person. The first African American to play college football and the first to be named an All-American.

William H. Lewis was an African American pioneer in athletics, politics and law. He was the first African-American college football player and the first to be selected as an All-American. In 1912, he was appointed United States Assistant Attorney General, then the highest position ever held in the executive branch held by an African American.

Lewis played football for Amherst College from 1888-1891 and was elected team captain in 1891. He has been cited as the first African American football player, and the 1888 Amherst team was the first integrated team in the history of the sport. After graduating from Amherst, Lewis enrolled at Harvard Law School and played for the Harvard football team in 1892 and 1893. He was named as an All-American in both years at Harvard. Caspar Whitney called Lewis "the best all-round centre that has ever put on a football jacket", and Walter Camp named him to his All-Time All America Team, noting that Lewis's quickness had revolutionized center play.

Following law school, Lewis was hired as a football coach at Harvard where he served from 1895-1906. During his coaching tenure the team had a combined record of 114-15-5. In 1896, Lewis published A Primer of College Football, which was serialized by Harper's Weekly. In 1904, a Philadelphia newspaper called Lewis the foremost expert on defense and placed him on a par with the legendary Walter Camp in his knowledge of the game. When university administrators sought to ban or change football to reduce the violence, Lewis opposed the changes, noting that he did not want to watch "a game of ping-pong or marbles upon the football field."

Image:McCoy pass to Chris Ogbonnaya 2008-10-04.JPG edit

Texas' Colt McCoy throws a 65-yard touchdown pass to Chris Ogbonnaya. The play was only allowed due to 2008 rule change that allows the QB to throw the ball if the ball is past the line of scrimmage, so long as a part of the QB (in this case the feet) remain behind the line of scrimmage (indicated here by the white yard marker.
