This train is named after the Maveli, an alias of the ruler Kerala in the mythology of Mahabali. The train runs via the coastal railway route of Alleppey.

The train 16604 leaves Thiruvananthapuram Central at 19:25 and arrives at Mangalore Central at 08:15 the next day while train no 16603 leaves Mangalore Central at 17:30 and arrives Thiruvananthapuram Central at 06:20 the next day.
