Career

edit

She started boxing in 2011. She credits her older brother Ádám with inspiring her to pursue a boxing career.[4]

She won a silver medal at the 2016 European Junior Championships and a bronze medal at the 2018 European Youth Championships.[5] She represented Hungary at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, where she competed in the 60 kg division.[6] In 2022, she took the silver medal in the welterweight category at the European U22 Championships in Poreč, Croatia.[4][7]

At the 2023 European Games in Nowy Targ, Poland, she won a bronze medal in the welterweight category, thus earning a quota for the 2024 Summer Olympics.[2][8] She also competed at the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, but lost to Oshin Derieuw in the preliminary round.[9]

She represented Hungary at the Paris Olympic Games in the 66 kg category, becoming the first female boxer from Hungary to participate in the Olympics.[2] She defeated Marissa Williamson of Australia in the round of 16.[10] In the quarterfinal, she lost to Imane Khelif of Algeria,[11] whose participation at the event had become a subject of controversy due to rumours about her gender after defeating Angela Carini of Italy. Prior to the quarterfinal, the Hungarian Olympic Committee issued a statement, saying, "A basic requirement for women's equality is that only those with female biological characteristics [...] are allowed to compete in the women's category." The committee also stated they were exploring what measures can be taken "to protect Luca Hámori's rights to fair competition".[12]

Hámori herself has received backlash for her comments and social media posts related to Khelif in the days leading up to the match. She stated, "if someone on Earth has allowed [Khelif] to be here, then it was somehow proven that she is a girl."[13] In contrast, she later said, "Whether [Khelif] is a boy or a girl, I just want to defeat her. [...] I don't think it's fair either that this contestant can compete among women, but I can't focus on this right now."[14][15] In a TikTok video, Hámori also referred to Khelif as a man.[16] In her Instagram Stories, she reposted a comment that refers to Khelif as a "mongrel", as well as an image depicting a boxing match between a woman and a cartoon beast with horns.[16][17] The Algerian Olympic Committee has filed a complaint to the International Olympic Committee over Hámori's social media posts.[18]

Awards

edit

She was elected Hungarian Boxer of the Year [hu] in 2021, 2022 and 2023.[19]

Personal life

edit

Hámori was born in Szombathely on 12 March 2001. Her older brother, Ádám Hámori (born 1995), is a five-time national champion and European junior champion in boxing.[20][21]

She underwent sugery on her left shoulder in January 2024.[9] As of 2024, she lives in Kőszeg.[4]
