List of people who use their middle names as their first names

In various cultures, a middle name is a portion of a personal name that is written between a person's given name and surname.[1] This list includes people who use their middle name, or one of their middle names, or a diminutive form of their middle name, such as Bob for Robert or Ted for Edward, as their first name, or in some instances, they use their middle name mononymously. The list includes actors, athletes, authors, business people, celebrities, historical figures, journalists, musicians, singers, songwriters, social media personalities, television personalities, writers, and multiple politicians and first ladies from several different countries.

Notable siblings who use their middle names as their first names include Mike McCartney and Paul McCartney and Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning.[2][3] Notable fathers and sons include NBA basketball players Corey Crowder and Jae Crowder;[4] stock car racing drivers Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.,[5] American actors Stacy Keach Sr. and Stacy Keach,[6] Gary Busey and Jake Busey,[7] American musicians Hank Williams Jr. and Hank Williams III,[8] and American television personalities Art Linkletter and Jack Linkletter.[9]

Background

edit

The term "middle name" made its debut in an 1835 Harvard University publication titled Harvardiana, although the practice of using middle names can be traced back through examining the history of their usage.[10] English historian Stephen Wilson says that the usage of middle names likely came from the tradition of using two first names in medieval Italy.[11] The custom of giving children two names became widely accepted across Europe during the following centuries, and by the late 1800s, middle names were frequently being used in the United States, especially with the upper class.[11] With the introduction of official documents, like Social Security cards and enlistment forms for the military, in the early 1900s, the acceptance of using middle names to distinguish family members was utilized more often.[11][10] According to The Atlantic, 75 percent of Americans had middle names by the late 1970s.[11] In the southern United States, people are more prone to using their middle names as their first names, more so than the remaining areas of the country.[11][12] The usage of names in other cultures, such as in East Asia, may not directly correlate to the way middle names are used in the United States or the West.[11] It is common for Muslims in South Asia to name their children after Muhammad, with their middle name or surname being used as their given name.[13][14]
