As of 1 December 2019, the station was renamed into "Ketapang Station" based on the proposal of the Banyuwangi Regency Government to Kereta Api Indonesia so that it can make it easier for tourists visiting Banyuwangi.[2][3]

History edit

The background to the opening of the new port in Ketapang was the silting of the port city of Banyuwangi (now Boom Beach) which made it difficult for freight ships to lean on the pier.[4] On 1 January 1974, this port activity was stopped and moved to a new port in Meneng (now Tanjungwangi).[5]

Because the need for crossings is increasing, it is necessary to create integration and continuity between modes of transportation. This station was built simultaneously with the construction of a new line from Kabat Station to Ketapang Harbor in 1984–1985 to replace the Banyuwangi Lama Station which had been established in the city of Banyuwangi. On 7 September 1985, the new line was officially opened along with the operation of this station and two other stations located on the line (Karangasem—now Banyuwangi Kota—and Argopuro).[6]

Building and layout edit

Ketapang Station has six train lines with track 2 being a straight track. To the north of this station there is a locomotive sub-depot and a train depot to store and maintain the train fleet, especially trains operated by Kereta Api Indonesia's Operational Area IX.
