James Wise (businessman)

James Wise is a venture capitalist and author from Greater Manchester, England.[1]

At 29, Wise was made a partner at the European venture capital firm Balderton Capital, becoming the youngest partner of a venture capital firm at the time.[2][3] He has been associated with the firms' investments into Sophia Genetics, Depop and GoCardless and recognised as one of Europe's most influential technology investors.[4][5]

In 2023, Wise was appointed to the UK Government's Industrial Development Advisory Board.[6]

Comments on entrepreneurship

edit

Wise has been a regular commentator on the role of entrepreneurship in economic development, in particular in the UK. In 2024 he wrote that the UK has historically 'denigrated entrepreneurs'[7] and needed to change tact. In 2020 he was an expert witness to the UK Government's Parliamentary Select Committee into scaling-up businesses,[8] and in 2023 he authored 'Start-Up Century', a book on entrepreneurship published by Bloomsbury Publishing.[9]
