Helen is the daughter of Australian escapologist and magician Arthur Coghlan.[4] She began her career in 1981. At the 19th Australian Convention of Magicians in 1984, she took home the first place trophy for junior magic.[5]

Professional life

edit

Helen started working as a magician's assistant at the Magic Castle.[6]

In 1987, she was the first woman in the world who completed for the first time the fear-inducing underwater act known as Houdini's Water Torture Escape, created by the legendary Harry Houdini.[6]

Helen Coghlan performs illusions created by Arthur on the television program Penn and Teller Fool Us.[7]

In 2018, she appeared on the 5th season of Penn & Teller: Fool Us,[8][9] where she successfully fooled Penn and Teller with a trick where she pushed a solid rod through a glass of milk.[10]

She appeared on the show again in 2019 on the 6th season and fooled Penn and Teller once more.

In 2020, she appeared on the 7th season[1][11] and became the first person to fool Penn & Teller three times on their show Fool Us.[12][13][14][3][15]

Helen also appeared on the 8th season (2021).[16] She performed in the episode "Penn & Teller's Worst Nightmare" on WCCB Charlotte's CW featuring magicians Jandro, Piff the Magic Dragon and Paul Gertner[17] and fooled them again.[18]

In 2022, Helen made her mark by appearing in episode 3 of Season 9 titled "Four Fools and Counting...,"[19] where she achieved the remarkable feat of fooling Penn and Teller for the fifth time.[20] She showcased two tricks, both of which successfully deceived the duo. Returning to the stage in 2023, Helen once again made history by becoming the sole magician to outsmart Penn and Teller on six occasions. This extraordinary feat occurred in Season 10, Episode 7 titled "The Princess and the Wizard."[21]
