History edit
Gwangsan B, like all other constituencies located in Gwangju and the Honam region, is considered as a stronghold for the liberal Democratic Party.[1][2][3] The constituency has voted for candidates of the Democratic Party and its predecessor parties in every election except for in 2016.[4]
Lee Yong-seop of the United Democratic Party was the first member to represent the constituency winning in a landslide with 73.16% of the vote.[5] Lee won-re-election in 2012 with 74.67% of the vote against Hwang Cha-eun of the Unified Progressive Party.[6] However, Lee resigned from the National Assembly on May 7, 2014, in order to run as an independent candidate for Mayor of Gwangju in the upcoming local elections.[7] Kwon Eun-hee of the centrist-liberal New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) won the by-election for the constituency, securing 60.6% of the vote.[8] In the aftermath of the NPAD party split, incumbent Kwon Eun-hee along with other influential Honam politicians joined the People Party led by Ahn Cheol-soo.[9] Despite Gwangsan B and the region's historical preference for candidates of the Democratic Party, Kwon won re-election as a member of the People Party in the 2016 election.[10][11] Kwon did not stand for re-election in the 2020 election. She was succeeded by Min Hyung-bae of the Democratic Party who won in a landslide with 84.05% of the vote.[12] Min won re-election in 2024 against former Prime Minister of South Korea Lee Nak-yon of the New Future Party.[13][14]
