Freeland Wood is the Sheriff-elect of Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Wood retired from the Shawnee Police Department on March 31, 2024 with 36 years of service. He officially announced his candidacy for Pottawatomie County Sheriff on May 7, 2024 and was elected on June 18, 2024. [1]

Personal Life

Wood and his wife, Shirley, have lived in Pottawatomie County for most of their lives. Freeland is a graduate of Shawnee High School, while Shirley, a teacher at North Rock Creek Public Schools, graduated from Tecumseh High School. Together, they have two children; Justin and Jonathon, and seven grandchildren.

Career

In 1992, Wood assumed the role of Community Police Officer for the Shawnee Housing Authority, highlighting his commitment to fostering positive relationships within the community. Two years later, in 1994, Wood transitioned to become the School Resource Officer at Shawnee High School.

In recognition of his contributions to law enforcement and public safety, Wood was awarded the inaugural Shawnee Police Foundation Officer of the Year Award in 2006. His career advanced steadily, with a promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 2011, where he undertook supervisory duties while remaining active on the streets.

In 2016, Freeland attained the rank of Lieutenant, assuming responsibilities as the midnight shift supervisor. In 2019, he took on a special assignment as the first School Resource Officer for North Rock Creek School. After a long and gratifying career, Freeland returned to street duty in 2023 to conclude his tenure with the Shawnee Police Department, retiring on March 31st, 2024.[2]

2024 Election

Wood officially announced his candidacy for Pottawatomie County Sheriff on May 7, 2024. His only competitor in the race was incumbent Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie.[3]

The election was held on June 18, 2024. Wood won the office with over 70% of the vote. He will be sworn into office in January 2025.[4]
