(a) Intracellular free quota 𝑞 during a vertical oscillatory migration in the depth range 𝑧𝐶±𝛿𝑧 with center position 𝑧𝐶 = 90 m and half amplitude 𝛿𝑧 = 40 m. Arrows indicate the swimming/floating direction. History dependence in the depth profile of 𝑞 creates a hysteresis curve.
