Summary

Description
English: This cartoon refers to the opposition of the nominee to an abortion-related plank during the George McGovern 1972 presidential campaign. The text of the plank in question was "In matters relating to human reproduction, each person's right to privacy, freedom of choice, and individual conscience should be fully respected, consistent with relevant Supreme Court decisions." At the time it was known as the "minority plank" on abortion. During the convention, a Eugene Walsh, a delegate from Missouri, spoke, discussing the "murder of little children" and "the right of the fetus to life". McGovern's allies urged delegates to vote against the plank, and it was defeated although earlier the candidate had given verbal support for the plank to delegates from South Carolina. The history of this incident is related in Women, the convention and brown paper bags by Shirley MacLaine in the New York Times, July 30, 1972 McGovern's stated position was to let states' existing laws concerning abortion remain in place. This did not happen, as the Roe v. Wade decision struck them down in the coming year.
