One of the features of the past year, in connection with the hatcherywork, has been the increased interest shown by fish and game clubs invarious parts of the state in the distribution of both food and game fish.In many cases these clubs have laid out well advised plans for stockingthe waters in their territory, and, in all cases where such organizationshave applied for fish, they have attended to the distribution in a praise-worthy manner. Careful attention has been given to the wants of the clubsand they have been advised in many instances as to the fish best suited tothe waters to be stocked and the proper number to be planted. All the information received indicates that the season has been highly satisfactory to the line fishermen. I find all the more satisfaction in thisstatement from the fact that conditions affecting the trout were not in allcases satisfactory at our hatcheries. The trouble at the Cold Spring Har-bor Hatchery, reported at length last season, was again in evidence anddestroyed the large number of wild trout with which we endeavored torestock the brood ponds there. This matter is treated in detail in thereport of the foreman in charge. Serious difficulties were also experiencedat the Pleasant Valley Hatchery which are reported fully elsewhere.
