Elsie Frost (née Lorenz) was an American educator who passionately advocated for children and education. She earned her B.S. and M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her legacy is detailed in Life with Elsie by James A. Frost. Additionally, the College at Oneonta established a scholarship in her honor.[2]

Early life and education
editElsie Frost was born on May 5, 1919, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Herbert N. and Olive (Jones) Lorenz of Blairstown, New Jersey. Herbert Lorenz, Elsie's father, was of pure German descent and was born in Philadelphia. He received training in chemistry and was proficient in English, Spanish, and German.[3] Prior to her marriage, Olive (Jones) Lorenz, Elsie's mother, worked as a teacher and was one of six children. [4]
In June of 1939, Frost obtained her Bachelor of Science from Teacher's College, Columbia University.[5] Subsequently, at the age of 20, Frost began her teaching career by signing her first contract with Briarcliff Manor School in Westchester County, NY.[2][6] While teaching, Frost earned her Master’s Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in the spring of 1941.[7]

editOn Sunday, September 14th, 1942, Elsie and James A. Frost exchanged marriage vows officiated by Rev. Harry Arthur Frost, the father of James A. Frost, at Richmond Hill in New York. At the ceremony were Elsie's grandfather, William Jones, who had traveled from Blairstown, Jean and Harry Deppert, and Catherine and William Barnola.[8]
Children
editElsie Frost had at least three children with her husband, James A. Frost.[9][10]
