Gurel played in the 2023 Chess World Cup, causing a major upset when he defeated Velimir Ivić in the first game of their round one encounter.[4]

Gurel secured the third Grandmaster (GM) norm in the Challengers tournament at the 2024 Prague Chess Festival. He also won the tournament on 6.5/9. Since he had already surpassed the 2500 rating mark in June 2023, this win secured him the Grandmaster title.
