Economy of South Gujarat

South Gujarat is an industrial hub and one of the fastest growing regions in India. The city is a hub of diamond polishing industries, and it has the world's largest diamond trade center, Surat Diamond Bourse. Southern Gujarat contributes more than 50% share of Micro Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) unit in Gujarat (2006–15). Region's share to Gujarat's MSME investment is 33% and share to employment is 46%, making MSME the economic backbone of the region. Dominant MSMEs of the region include Textile- manufacturing & retailing, Diamond- cutting & polishing, Chemical & Petrochemical industries, Pharmaceutical and Plastic manufacturing industry.[1] The region contributes 20% (12 million) to state population, and it covers 12% (24,034 sqkm) area of Gujarat. The population density is 511 person/sqkm, compared to Gujarat's density.
