Yusuff Adebayo Adebisi is a Nigerian pharmacist, health systems researcher and global health advocate.[1] He currently serves as the Director for Research and Thought Leadership at Global Health Focus, an initiative that build critical thinkers and leaders in global health.[1] Before graduation from the university, he published more than 50 research articles in many peer-reviewed journals.[2] His research publications featured in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Lancet Global Health, Journal of Global Health, and BMJ Global Health.[3] In 2021, he received the prestigious Diana Award for his work in research and advancing public health[4][5] Yusuff's achievements have inspired an interest in research in Nigeria and across Africa among students and young professionals.[2][5]

Education

Yusuff Adebayo Adebisi attended Immanuel Nursery and Primary School, Akeetan-Titun, Oyo and School of Science, Oyo for his secondary education finishing as best graduating student in his class.[6] He studied Bachelor of Pharmacy at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest university, where he graduated with a First-Class (Distinction) in 2021.[7][8][9] He is currently pursuing his MSc in Global Health Science and Epidemiology at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford as a Commonwealth Shared Scholar.[2] At Oxford, he is also affiliated to St Cross College.[2]

Career

Yusuff Adebayo Adebisi began his career in public health research and advocacy as an undergraduate contributing to many peer-reviewed journal publications in the field.[1][2][3] This earned him nomination for the Pharmacy Student of the Year Award in Nigeria.[10] He was a student editor at the International Journal of Medical Students[3] and a former student ambassador at the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.[11] He is a member of Youth Editorial Board of the Journal of Public Health Challenges published by Wiley,[2][12] and an Associate Editor at the Annal of Public Health Issues published by Sciendo.[13]. His research interests cut across pandemic preparedness and response, social epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and tobacco harm reduction.

Yusuff is the Director for Research and Thought Leadership at Global Health Focus, an organization that focuses on building critical thinkers in global health for achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals. He also works for the African Young Leaders for Global Health and as a co-convener for Pharma Incubation Hub.[1] He is a life-member of Oxford University Scientific Society.[2] His team "the Global Health Enthusiast" emerged as one of the 11 winners of the 2018 Geneva's Innovate4AMR Global Competition organised by World Health Organisation, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, South Centre Geneva, ReAct-Action on Antibiotic Resistance and the International Federation of Medical Students Associations.[14][15] In 2019, Yusuff convened team of young people to carry out an awareness-based project using community outreaches and social media to raise awareness on antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria for a period of 100 days (February 2nd to May 13th, 2019).[16] in 2019, Yusuff was awarded the Knowledge-Action-Change’s Tobacco Harm Reduction Scholarships, which was followed by an enhanced scholarships in 2021 to continue his work in the field of tobacco harm reduction and smoking cessation.[17] In early 2022, Yusuff was awarded Kevin Molloy Fellowship.[18] He is an advocate of tobacco harm reduction.[17] In 2020, he was awarded the joint Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and UK National Institute of Health and Care Research Early Career Grant Award for a study aimed at understanding public health responses and COVID-19 in 13 WHO-Prioritized African Countries with a focus on risk communication and community engagement strategies, surveillance systems, and laboratory testing capacity.[1][19] Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Adebisi has also published various articles on COVID-19 in Africa and beyond.[1] In 2021, Yusuff was recognized with the Diana Award, an award established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Award is given out by the charity of the same with the support of The Duke of Cambridge, and The Duke of Sussex, for his work.[5] Yusuff has presented papers at conferences including 7th World Healthcare Students Symposium in Kigali, 6th Global Forum on Nicotine in Warsaw, 22nd International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, the First Planetary Health Conference in the Gambia and at the First International Lassa Fever Conference in Abuja.[1] He was a panelist in one of the sessions at the 2021 Future of Research Communication and E-Scholarships (FORCE21) Conference, where he shared some of the success of the early engagement of students and early career professionals in scholarly communications.[20]

Yusuff’s mission is to engage in research that will advance population health in Africa and beyond.[2][5][9]
