Yosyp Hirniak was a Ukrainian-American theater actor and director, was associated with the Kurbas group . He and his wife, Olimpia Dobrovolska, founded the Ukrainian Theater in America and the Theater of the Word in the United States.

He was born on 14 April 1895 in Strusiv, Terebovlia.

He and his wife Olimpia were among first employees of the Berezil Theater of Les Kurbas in Kyiv.^[1]

Hirniak died on 17 January 1989 in New York.
