Yorgos Ziavras (Greek: Γιώργος Ζιάβρας) is a Greek-German conductor and pianist based in Cologne, Germany. Since its foundation in 2015, he serves as Artistic Director of CoGNiMUS Collektiv[1] (an artistic platform with an owned orchestra based in Cologne). In 2019 he founded ÉRMA ensemble,[2] a new and contemporary classical music ensemble in which he serves as the Principal Conductor.
Biography
editYorgos Ziavras studied conducting with Prof. Michael Luig at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, piano in Athens under Elisabeth Kounalaki and in Cologne with Paulo Álvares, as well as architecture at the NTUA in Athens.[3]
Before his departure from Greece to Cologne he served as musical director of Oper(O),[4] an opera ensemble in Athens, with which he created, rehearsed and directed numerous productions including, "Fiammifero" (2011), "Carmen in 20 min. (2012), "Voyage" (2012), "Waiting for the Night" (2013).
From 2014/15 to 2017 he was a member of the Niederrhein Opera Studio. During this time, he conducted numerous performances of various productions at the Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach.[5]
In 2017, Ziavras was hired as assistant conductor at Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach. In 2021 he rose to the position of Deputy Principal Conductor, while at the same time he managed to greatly expand his musical repertoire to include a wide range of works for opera, operetta, musical theatre, and early music.
In 2018, he began conducting for his home opera house,[6] the Greek National Opera, urged by the then Artistic Director Giorgos Koumendakis.
Artistic Collaborations & Personal Ensembles
editIn 2015, while still a student at Hochschule Fur Musik und Tanz Koln, he founded, under the guidance of his professor Paulo Alvares, CoGNiMUS Collektiv,[7] an artist's collective with its own orchestra primarily based in Cologne, Germany.
In 2019 along with fellow fanatics of contemporary classical music he co-founded ÉRMA ensemble. A new and contemporary music ensemble based in Cologne, Germany.[8]
He has worked with multiple orchestras and ensembles including, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Niederrheinische Sinfoniker, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, Ensemble MusikFabrik,[9] ERGON Ensemble,[10] TETTTIX,[11] and has appeared in concert halls throughout Europe including Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Megaron - Athens Concert Hall, Greek National Opera, WDR Funkhaus among others.

editIn 2020/2021 he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).
Since 2023 he and his ensemble ÉRMA have held a scholarship from InSzene - Podium Gegenwart of the Deutscher Musikrat. During his tenure at Theater Krefeld/Mönchengladbach (2020), he was awarded the Förderpreis for his artistic excellence by the "Freunde der Musik" association.[13]
