Yann Rausis (born 26 December 1993)[1] is a Swiss professional freeride skier and filmmaker[2].

He is a veteran of the Freeride World Tour, where he earned the "Rookie of the Year" award in his first season in 2017 and finished just outside the podium in 4th place.[1][3]

Today, Rausis, no longer competing, focuses primarily on film projects, having directed or starred in several films about freeride skiing.

Early life and education

Yann Rausis was born on 26 December 1993, in Valais, Switzerland. His mother, Marianne Claret[4], is a Swiss author, teacher and photographer[5] born in 1967 and his father, Yves Rausis[4], is a respected Swiss mountain guide working in Verbier[6], born in 1954.

He grew up in Orsières, Valais, in the mountainous Entremont region and started skiing, his lifelong passion, aged 2.[7]

He studied at the Saint-Maurice Abbey high school between 2007 and 2012[8]. In 2013, then aged about 20, he started studying engineering phsyics at the EPFL, in Lausanne[9]. He graduated in 2018, with a Master's Degree in engineering phsyics and applied physics[10].

2017 was the first and most successful Freeride World Tour (FWT) season for Yann Rausis.[1] At the first race[11], in Vallnord-Arcalís (Andorra), he came third[1], gaining his best result of the season. At the second race[12], still in Vallnord-Arcalís, he came sixth. At the third race[13], in Fieberbrunn (Austria), he came fourth[1]. At the fourth race[14], in Haines (Alaska), he came fifth[1]. Finally, at the last race of the season[15], the Xtreme Verbier, in his native Switzerland, he came fourth[1].

Overall, with a total of 7220 points, Rausis came fourth[1]. For his impressive technique throughout the season, he was named "Rookie of the Year".[16]
