The World Fisheries Day is celebrated on November 21st. Originally established to reduce illegal, unregulated, and unreported activities in the fisheries sector.
Fishing communities all over the world commemorate this day with rallies, workshops, public gatherings, cultural events, plays, exhibitions, music shows, and demonstrations to emphasize the value of protecting the world's fisheries.[1] Serving as a reminder of the critical contribution that oceans, lakes and rivers make in our daily lives.
History edit
In 1997, members of the World Forum on Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF) gathered in New Delhi. This meeting of representatives from 18 countries gave way to the establishment of the World Fisheries Forum and allowed the signing of a declaration approving a global mandate for sustainable fishing practices and policies.[2]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) made efforts to reduce, prevent and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in 2003. [3] Not long after the WFF joined to propose an international day dedicated to fisheries that could help raise awareness about this issue.
The proposal was adopted by the FAO General Assembly in 2003, officially designating November 21st as World Fisheries Day.
Data edit

Additionally 36 million tons of algae were farmed in the same year which set a new record. Stated in the biennial flagship report of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division. [4]
Dr. S.K Singh published a special issue on World Fisheries Day on behalf of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in November 2020. [5]
