The World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. It covers three geographical regions: the Asia-Pacific through Asia-Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy (A-PSDE); Europe/Mediterranean through European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE); and the Americas through Inter-American Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED).

The WEO's mission is to promote high-quality, safe endoscopy practices worldwide through training, education, and research. The organization places particular emphasis on supporting underserved regions globally.

History

edit

WEO was established in 1962 during the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Munich, Germany. Until 2010, the society was known as “Organisation Mondiale d’Endoscopie Digestive” (OMED), when the name was changed to the “World Endoscopy Organization” (WEO).[1]

In 2017, WEO hosted the inaugural ENDO, the World Congress of GI Endoscopy, in Hyderabad, India.[2] ENDO 2017 received the International & European Association Award in 2018 for "Best Conference Development," presented by the Association of Association Executives in Antwerp, Belgium. [3]

Structure

edit

WEO serves as an umbrella organization, encompassing three primary geographical zones:[4]

  • Asia-Pacific: Asia-Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy (A-PSDE)
  • Europe/Mediterranean: European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)
  • The Americas: Inter-American Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED)

Member societies are typically affiliated with and represented by one of these three zones. However, WEO also includes independent societies that are not affiliated with any specific zone, as well as individual members.[5]

Committees

edit

WEO is structured into various committees, each responsible for overseeing specific activities within the organization. These committees include an Executive Committee, along with several standing and ad hoc committees that focus on different aspects of WEO's mission. [4]

The WEO Governing Council oversee the strategic direction and governance of the organization. It is composed of members from the Executive Committee, Chairs of the Standing Committees, and the Presidents of WEO's three geographical zones.[6]

Activities

edit

WEO offers a range of educational courses and training programs worldwide, addressing various aspects of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. These include diagnostic endoscopy, colorectal cancer screening, video capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), leadership training, train-the-trainers initiatives, and more. The organization places a strong emphasis on supporting underserved regions across the globe.[4]

Additionally, WEO is actively involved in research to advance GI endoscopy, contributing to the field through the publication of research papers, guidelines, and position statements.

ENDO

edit

ENDO is the premier international congress of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy organized by WEO. The congress is held biannually at different global locations. The congresses held to date are:[7]
