Draft:When the Root Children Wake Up

  • Comment: As previously advised book retailers, such as Publishers Weekly and Booklist are not independent or reliable sources, neither is google search. Dan arndt (talk) 07:13, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
  • Comment: Fails WP:NBOOK - Audrey Wood's website and Scholastic's websites are all primary sources. Book retail websites, such as Publishers Weekly, are not considered independent secondary sources, as they are generally based on publisher's press releases for the book. Need additional reviews, other than Kirkus, from reliable independent sources. Dan arndt (talk) 06:59, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

When the Root Children Wake Up is a children's fiction picture book by American author Audrey Wood illustrated by Ned Bittinger, the book was published in 2002 by Scholastic. It is a retelling of Sibylle Von Olfers' book, The Root Children, originally published in 1906.[1][2][3]

Synopsis edit

The story follows the Root Children through their annual "masquerade" through the seasons with Aunt Spring, and Cousin Summer. Throughout the story, the children paint bugs, sew their flowering costumes, and frolic around. When Uncle Fall arrives the “masquerade” is over, and the Root Children are tucked in again for the winter.[1][4][5]

Reception edit

Publishers Weekly criticizes Wood's words calling them "slightly forced" while also calling Bittinger's illustrations "a laudable effort, but one that's ultimately less than the sum of its parts."[1] Kirkus Reviews called both the words and images "quite charming", while also pointing out the difference between Wood's story and the original by Olfers, "Wood’s tale changes the Root Children’s activities from work to play—not a bad thing, but a definite difference."[5][3]
