Wang Guan (born 14 September 1984) is a journalist, TV host and author. He is the host of Leaders Talk(高端访谈).[1]on China Central Television (CCTV) and the Hub with Wang Guan on China Global Television Network (CGTN)[2][3]. He was CCTV's Chief U.S. Correspondent based in Washington D.C. from 2011 to 2019[4][5]. He writes and hosts Reality Check with Wang Guan[6]. He is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader[7]. He is also a YLF Fellow with the National Committee on U.S. China Relations[8], and an Asia 21 Young Leader of the Asia Society[9]. He was once described by Henry Kissinger as a reporter who asks "very good questions"[10].
Education
editWang Guan was born in Jinan, Shandong province. In 2007, he graduated from Communication University of China with a Bachelor of Arts in international journalism. In 2006, he represented his university and won the first prize in China's 21st Century Cup National English Speaking Competition. In 2016, he graduated with a Master of Arts in international relations from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at the Johns Hopkins University[11]. In 2022, he completed a diploma in Strategies for Sustainability at Stanford University.[4]
Career
editWang Guan joined CCTV in 2007 and started as a copy writer and video editor. He became a reporter in 2010 and was promoted to be the network's youngest Chief Correspondent in 2011. He travelled extensively across China for breaking stories.[4][5]
Between 2011 and 2019, he was CCTV's Chief U.S. Correspondent based in Washington D.C..He covered 2012 and 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections, and reported from the White House and the State Department on Barack Obama's Presidency from 2012 to 2016 and on Donald Trump's Presidency from 2016 to 2019, with a focus on China-U.S. relations and U.S. foreign policy.[5][4]
In 2019, he returned to Beijing and became a news anchor for CGTN and a writer, producer and host for Reality Check with Wang Guan[12]. In 2021, the Hub with Wang Guan premiered on CGTN[3]. Since 2022, he began hosting Leaders Talk (高端访谈), a talk show featuring global leaders and heads of state[1].
Notable guests he has interviewed include former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger[13], Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi[14], Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.[15], Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif[16], Montenegrin President Milo Dukanovic[17], Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali[18], IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva[19], then U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry[20], and former Chinese Vice Premier Liu He[21]
In September 2021, he published his first book Manufacturing the China Narrative: How the West Got China Wrong and What China Can Do to Better Explain Itself,《让世界听懂中国》.[22][23]
