The Vidervol VS-1 is a homebuilt aircraft of original design.[1]

Design

edit

James Vidervol first started designing and building the aircraft in 1946, at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, with the goal of racing it by 1949. However, he ended up getting into boating, and shelved the project until he met Arpad Szaraz in the 1950's, who helped him complete it.

The VS-1 is considered the "prototype" for the Daphne SD-1A.[2]

Operational History

edit

The aircraft first attended the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in in 1962.[3] By 1965, the aircraft had accumulated over 500 flight hours.[1] In 1970, Vidervol entered the aircraft in the 1970 Oshkosh Aircraft Efficiency Contest, where it placed third, behind the Thorp T-18 and the Szaraz SDS-1A Daphne.[2]

As of December 2023, the aircraft is still in existence, and is being restored near Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
