Víctor Ernesto Gutiérrez Cuiza, also known as VictorPiano (Santiago, Chile, May 3 1991) is a Chilean musician, multimedia composer, interpreter and performer,[1] who currently resides in Hamburg, Germany. His works "belong to the 'extended fields' of new music: electronics, light, animation, video, folklore, dance, theater, improvisation, programming and generative musical dialogue, among others, to generate a complex and intimate worldview".[2]
Career
editAfter finishing secondary school, he was accepted into a BA in Composition at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile, from which he graduated in 2017 and where he studied under names such as Andrés Maupoint and Andrés Ferrari. During that period, together with colleagues from the same faculty, he founded the interdisciplinary ensemble Atoq, and the band Canto Crisol, with whom he "cultivated Latin American fusion playing piano, guitar, Colombian tiple, singing and composing".[1] Some of his more notable compositions of this period are Qatachillay, Estupor, Sybill and Podríamos Contar Otra Historia. In parallel to these projects, he participated in several editions of the Prismas festival, of the cultural platform Germinacciones created by the Italian Luca Belcastro, as well as being part of the University of Chile's Contemporary Music Festival.
In 2018 he began a master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. There, among others, he studied under Georg Hajdu and Alexander Schubert. Studying in Europe allowed him to participate in various festivals there, including Selva 4.1, rC3 chaostrawler, Blurred Edges, and Symphony in the Elbtunnel. Throughout his time in Hamburg he has also formed part of other artistic groups, such as YNFB (Your New Favorite Band), GlitterBox collective and Chromatic Noise Collection. Some of his works from this period include Anhelos de Bolsillo, Ofrendas (composed in Chile, but premiered in Germany), Morir sin Saber dónde Poner una Flor ('To Die without Knowing where to Place a Flower', a tribute to Ana González de Recabarren, a Chilean human rights activist), Texculpting and [RE]quiem: for all those who die in silence.
At the end of his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, in 2022, he premiered the work Choreatmosphere: 2021,[3] a piece commissioned by the TRR 181 Collaborative Research Center of the University of Hamburg, and which he made in conjuction with Valentino Neduhal, a doctoral student from the same university. This piece served as the prelude to another commission from the same German scientific center, which resulted in the work Encoding Seas,[4] a 'sonification' of scientific data obtained from marine currents by researchers Dr. Alexa Griesel (University of Hamburg) and Dr. Julia Dräger-Dietel (University of Hamburg): "What I do first is the sonification process, in this case applied to the orchestra, but then, on this almost mathematical result, I intervene, filter, expand, and use my intuition in order to transmit, according to my understanding, the concept that we are developing".[5] Encoding Seas, which includes three poems by the composer himself, was premiered and performed in December 2022 in Berlin by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.
