edit

The State University of Northern Paraná (UENP) is a public higher education institution maintained by State of Paraná, located in the cities of Jacarezinho, Bandeirantes and Cornélio Procópio. The University's President Office is located in the city of Jacarezinho. The institution currently offers 26 undergraduate courses, 10 specialization courses, as well as 6 master's and 2 doctoral degrees. With over 5,500 students, the university has many undergraduates not only from the state of Paraná, but also from the south and southwest regions of the state of São Paulo.

History

edit

UENP was created by the Interim Governor Hermas Brandão through the State Law n. 15.300, of September 28th, 2006, and authorized by the State Decree n. 3.909, of December 1st, 2008. It was formed by the merger of the isolated colleges Faculdade Estadual de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Cornélio Procópio (FAFICOP), Faculdade Estadual de Filosofia de Jacarezinho (FAFIJA), Faculdade de Educação Física e Fisioterapia (FAEFIJA), Faculdade Estadual de Direito do Norte Pioneiro (FUNDINOPI) and Faculdades Luiz Meneghel (FALM), which gave birth to the State University of Northern Paraná.

Previous to its creation, however, a series of measures had been taken to improve the performance of the previously isolated colleges in the north of the state. One of them was the State Law No. 13.283, of October 25, 2001, still under the mandate of Governor Jaime Lerner, which created UNESPAR, an autarchy so that Paraná's isolated state colleges could be merged with this institution. The bureaucratization created by the measure and local dissatisfaction soon made the initial project unfeasible. The greatest tensions were caused mainly by the colleges in Jacarezinho, which, despite being linked, did not even adapt to UNESPAR.

In the administration of Governor Roberto Requião, due to the rejection of the former project, consideration was first given to integrating the isolated colleges into the state universities that had already been consolidated. In the case of Northern Paraná, FAFIJA, FUNDINOPI, FAEFIJA, FALM and FAFICOP would be incorporated into UEL, in Londrina. Against this decision, the colleges' student collective, together with local leaders, gatherem themselves and created the "Pro-Regional University" movement, with the participation of the Association of Municipalities of the Northern Paraná (AMUNORPI) and the Jacarezinho's Diocese. The, then Bishop, Fernando José Penteado was appointed as the movement's leader, and later, with the success of the demands, he became UENP's first President.

Thus, the university is currently structured in a multi-campus format, geographically decentralized, constituting itself as a special regime state autarchy, enjoying a didactic-scientific, administrative, financial, and asset management autonomy, governed by its statutes and general regulations, and by the resolutions of its councils, observing and respecting the federal and state legislation. The institution has three campuses, located in the towns of Jacarezinho, Bandeirantes and Cornélio Procópio.
