Tsuriel Sdomi (Hebrew: צוריאל סדומי), (born June 10, 1965) is an Israeli-Portuguese lawyer, author, and artist those works have been exhibited in Italy, Israel, and the United States. A graduate of the Avni Institute of Art and Design and Jerusalem Studio School[1], Sdomi has been actively involved in the art world throughout his career. He currently directs the "Diokan" Israeli School of Art.[2]

For over 14 years, Sdomi has served as the general manager of the Israeli Plectrum Orchestra.[3] His collection of short stories book has received high praise from literary and academic circles both nationally and internationally.

In 2024, the book "The Case of the German Doctor" was distributed worldwide by Simon & Schuster.

Early life and education

Sdomi was born to a Safardi Spanish-Portuguese descent and his mother of Yemeni descent also being Jewish. He has six siblings.

Sdomi's family moved to Israel in the Operation Magic Carpet in 1949, during which nearly all of Yemen's Jewish population relocated to Israel.

After completing his basic studies, Tsuriel pursued a degree in biochemistry at Bar-Ilan University from 1992 to 1994. However, upon finishing his biochemistry program, he decided to change career paths and enrolled in law school at the same university, where he earned his law degree from 1994 to 1998.

Coming from an artist family, Tsuriel developed an interest in the arts, despite having had no previous direct exposure to the field, despite coming from a family with distinguished siblings. In 1999, he began his art education at the Avni Institute of Art and Design,[4] focusing on a Bachelor's degree in painting and sculpture from 2002 to 2004. Afterwards, he chose to specialize further in painting and sculpture, undertaking a postgraduate program at the Jerusalem Studio School[1] from 2002 to 2004.

Throughout his art education, Tsuriel participated in an exchange program at the Maryland Institute College of Art[5] in the United States, and also at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy,.[6] He completed his studies in 2006, enriched by these international experiences.

Career

After completing his law degree in 1998, he worked in several law offices while simultaneously pursuing studies in arts.

Following his art education, Sdomi joined one of Israel's largest law firms, S.Biran & Co,[7][8] in Tel Aviv, where he worked as a legal intern for a year. To support his family, he also began working with the Israel plectrum orchestra[3] as an orchestra manager as player.

By 2005, he shifted his focus to international events for the orchestra devoting himself full-time to the orchestra, serving as orchestra manager for 14 years and 8 months.

During his tenure as Administrative Manager of the Israel Plectrum Orchestra, alongside Musical Director Professor Moti Schmitt[9] from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, he participated in numerous international music festivals across Europe, including those in Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and Israel. His most significant project was a collaboration between a symphonic orchestra and classical mandolins, which inspired many prominent composers, including Noam Sheriff, Boaz Ben-Moshe,[10] and Haim Permont,[11] to create unique musical pieces. A particularly distinguished concert featured the Wurttembergische Philharmonie,[12] the Israeli Chamber Orchestra in Tel Aviv, and the Orchestra Giovanile Mediterranea , Italy.[13]

His first international success was "The Case of the German Doctor[14]" published by the Israeli agency Ebookpro[15][15] and available on Amazon.[16]

Parco Nonantola, Rosh Ha'ayin - Israel[17][18][19][20][21]

The connection between Rosh HaAyin and the story of the children of "Villa Emma" began when Sdomi met an elderly woman in Pordenone during a regional festival in 2018. She emotionally shared about the children of Villa Emma, who were saved by residents of Nonantola during World War II. This encounter moved Tsuriel to investigate further, revealing a heroic yet unrecognized act by the villagers. Alongside his friend Raffaello Hatuka, Tsuriel approached the mayor of Rosh HaAyin to construct a park and monument commemorating this humanitarian effort.

The project was realized, which also included an educational center for Israeli and Italian children to promote intercultural understanding. Additionally, Tsuriel collaborated with Francesco Lotoro to preserve and promote musical compositions created during the Holocaust, aiming to establish a profound connection between younger generations in Israel and Italy through music and historical remembrance.

In 2022, Tsuriel was commissioned by The Amen Institute[22][23] to sculpt a statue conveying a message against anti-Semitism, aligning with their mission to broaden the interpretation of Jewish texts and foster creative expression.

Tsuriel Sdomi's sculpture delves into the complex narrative of Bilam, a central figure in the Torah portion named after Balak. The artwork focuses on Bilam's paradoxical role as a prophet without a nation, symbolized by his one-eyed depiction reflecting the "evil eye" and his detachment from communal and covenantal bonds.

The sculpture explores themes of anti-Semitism through Bilam's interactions with Balak, highlighting the eternal struggle between fear, disgust, and hatred towards the Israelites. It underscores the enduring tension and misunderstandings between nations, echoing the Torah's reflection on the unpredictability of relationships beyond the Jewish community.

The sculpture "Captive," created in 2008, is a classic-style piece that explores themes of internal and emotional captivity. Crafted from plaster, the work depicts a man in a pose of containment and reflection, symbolizing the struggle and sense of psychological confinement.

The elegant texture and form of the plaster highlight the weight of emotional imprisonment and lend the sculpture an air of timelessness. "Captive" invites viewers to examine their own internal limitations and contemplate the process of personal liberation.

The Case of the German Doctor is a based-on-true-events story about William, the son of an SS officer, who relocates to the United States during World War II after learning his mother has Jewish ancestry. Following his grandmother's death, William inherits a noble title and wealth, becoming a gynecologist. At a medical conference in London, he discovers his father's wartime fate from a mysterious German doctor. Returning to the U.S., William opens a clinic and, with his cousin Katharina, helps Jewish women conceive. Accused of attempting genetic manipulation by a Holocaust survivor, William faces a controversial trial exploring themes of inherited evil and morality.

After launching the book on Amazon, Sdomi was invited to participate in the World's largest book fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023,[29] where he made numerous contacts and closed a deal with two publishing houses: the Spanish publisher, which is currently being translated into Spanish. Following the great success of the book as a bestseller on Amazon, the agency Simon & Schuster[30]is now distributing it globally.

On August 8, 2024 and July 11, 2024, Tsuriel Sdomi curated the art exhibition at Diokan School[31] , an event designed to enrichment among the local community. This diversity brought a rich variety of perspectives and styles to the exhibition, enhancing its depth and resonance.

These projects, spearheaded by Tsuriel Sdomi, is dedicated to providing artistic opportunities to everyone interested in learning. Sdomi, an accomplished artist himself, offers guidance and instruction, sharing techniques and insights he has acquired through years of national and international training and experience.
