Tomer Cohen is an Israeli-American jazz guitarist and composer.
Biography edit
Tomer Cohen (born October 15, 1996) is a jazz guitarist and composer. He was born in USA, but was raised in the small village of Kibbutz Gal'ed in Israel.[1]
At the age of thirteen, Cohen began learning to play the guitar in his kibbutz. One of the first musical influences were friends that taught him to play rock and metal songs, from bands such as Metallica and Led Zeppelin.[2][3] His musical influences and knowledge have expanded towards Jazz with the three-year high school music program that he enrolled in during high-school. During his time in the army, he began studying for two years in the Center of Jazz Studies at the Israel Music Conservatory in Tel Aviv.[4]
Cohen was granted a scholarship from The New School to complete his degree in New York.[4] In February 2023, he released his debut album, "Not the Same River", with drummer Obed Calvaire and bassist Matt Penman. The album showcases Cohen's diverse influences, including Middle Eastern, jazz from the NYC scene, folk, and rock.[5] It was released by Hypnote Records, a European-based label located in Brussels, Belgium.[6][7]
Musical Style edit
Tomer Cohen is notable for his distinctive picking technique, which employs a combination of flat-picking and finger-picking methods to achieve a unique sound characterized by counterpoint and reverberation.[8][9][10] Cohen's approach involves the utilization of a thumb and first finger to hold a pick, while the remaining three fingers are engaged in finger-picking. This technique enables him to simultaneously articulate chord notes, resembling the concurrent note production of a pianist, and explore polyrhythms spanning different chord notes.[11]
Musical Projects edit
Tomer Cohen Trio edit
The repertoire of the trio reflects Tomer Cohen's wide-ranging musical influences, encompassing Middle Eastern and folk elements, as well as the vibrant jazz scene of New York City.[6]
Cohen Almonte Duo edit
The Cohen Almonte Duo is a musical collaboration between Tomer Cohen and Peruvian guitarist Rodrigo Almonte. The Duo plays original compositions of both guitarists.[12][13]
