Tomato salad (Italian: Insalata pomodoro or simply insalata) is a basic Italian salad, made of sliced tomatoes, Red onion, and basil, seasoned with salt, oregano and extra virgin olive oil, paired with hot chili pepper. A common dish from Calabria in southern Italy, usually eaten in the summer months when tomatoes are most ripe. Most often it is paired with a crusty Italian bread.
Variants
editThe salad is completely customizable variants may include ingredients such as herbs, proteins, and balsamic vinegar. Among the most popular of variants is the Insalata Caprese and Panzanella (Bread and Tomato Salad).
