Tia Marie Scola (born August 27, 1996), known professionally as Tia Tia, is an American singer-songwriter. She is one half of the musical duo Beachcrimes, alongside songwriter and producer Ryan McMahon.

Scola began her professional career with Sony Music Publishing, releasing various singles and song-writing with other artists. In 2022, she signed with Warner Chappell Music, releasing 3 albums through them, including her debut self-titled album and her debut album as a part of Beachcrimes. In 2024, she left Warner and started releasing music through her and McMahon’s own independent record company, Whatever Records. Through this label, she continues to release singles.

Early life

Tia Marie Scola was born on August 27, 1996[1] in New Jersey[2][3][4] into a patriotic Christian family. She is the daughter of author and playwright, Susan P. Hunter.[5] Scola has two younger siblings: a sister[6] who also sings and a brother.[7] Her maternal grandmother wrote letters to Vietnam soldiers during the war to boost morale. Hunter later composed a book of these messages and gave it the title 77 Letters: Operation Morale Booster: Vietnam.[8][9] The Scola family originally hails from New England,[10] with roots in Massachusetts[11] before settling in New Jersey.

Scola grew up playing guitar and piano in Randolph, New Jersey. She took private classes in Mountain Lakes and online classes at Berklee College of Music. In high school, Scola did many things to further her career: took one class period a day to focus on songwriting, performed at several local venues, participated in debate for the category of oral interpretation of literature, and uploaded her music to YouTube. Upon graduating high school in 2014, she moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University as a songwriting business major. However, she left the college in 2016.

Career

During her time in Nashville, Scola played various venues including: Kafe Mozart, The Bluebird Café, The Listening Room, The Back Corner, The High Watt, The Sutler, and The Row. On June 24, 2016, she was one of 6 hand-selected people invited to perform at a networking event by the name of Firewrite. In November 2016, Scola participated in Belmont’s ASCAP Writers' Night at the Curb Cafe. After leaving Belmont, she interned and networked in an attempt to further her career. In April 2017, she co-wrote a song by the name of “Air” on Forrest Finn's Debut EP, Spotlight. In July 2017, she featured on a song titled “Homeless” by LOVRA.

Soon, Scola met Nick Bral of Sony Music Publishing, and signed her first publishing deal. In 2019, Scola moved to Los Angeles. Though she featured on songs occasionally in LA, she started to put more focus into song-writing with other artists. From 2020 to 2021, she co-wrote with artists such as: Ava Max, Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Saweetie, Addison Rae, and Olivia O'Brien. In November 2020, Scola co-wrote “My Head & My Heart” by Ava Max. This went on to win Scola a BMI Pop Award for “Most-Performed Songs of the Year” in 2022. In March 2021, she co-wrote “Off My Face” by Justin Bieber, which came to be released with his Justice album. The album went on to be nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 64th Grammy Awards in 2022. This made Scola a Grammy nominee.

On June 25, 2021, Scola released her debut single, “Red Wine” through Sony Music Publishing. This was the first instance in which Scola was credited under her stage name “Tia Tia” rather than “Tia Scola.” Throughout that year and the next, Scola released various singles. On September 21, 2021, Scola released her first music video for a song titled “Call Me.” On July 15, 2022, she released her last single through Sony, “Hey Would You Come My Way.” Following this, Scola signed a new publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. She continued to release singles through them.

In November 2022, Scola signed up for Jammcard, a platform in which she offers her music expertise to clients.

Throughout 2022, Scola and her producer Ryan McMahon created music in hotel rooms around the world. Through this, they became a sort of musical duo. On a particular day in Italy, they were blasting music so loud that the police got called on them. From this experience, they decided to name their duo Beachcrimes. In January 20, 2023, Scola released “Let’s Play House” through Warner Chappell Music, her first published song as a part of Beachcrimes.

Beachcrimes’ music career strategy is to put out quality songs frequently. Scola has a belief that this strategy will be the upcoming phenomenon. Accordingly, in 2023, the duo released 24 songs over 48 weeks. The songs were divided into 2 albums. The first was their debut album, PM. Its fourth track, “Elevator” went on to be the soundtrack to a TikTok trend which has accumulated hundreds of thousands of views. The second album was titled AM. In June 2023, its title track “Do It Better” charted the UK Trending TikTok charts at #5.

From 2022-2023, Scola notably co-wrote with artists such as: FLETCHER, Becky G, Anne-Marie, and Anitta. The following year, Scola made a major switch to focusing solely on her own music. On September 24, 2023 in Philadelphia, Scola opened for Leah Kate on her Super Over Tour at the Underground Arts theater. On December 15, 2023, Scola released her self-titled debut album, “Tia Tia.”

Scola gained attention in December 2023 when she participated in Crash Adams' sidewalk “Can You Rap” series which garnered over 120 million views. She performed with them again on April 4th, 2024 at the Venice West in California. In the viral video, Scola is seen wearing a Juventus jersey. Upon seeing this, the Juventus team reached out to Scola to perform during a game. She wrote a song titled “BLACK & WHITE” with the Juventus players, and produced it at Juventus Creators Lab. On July 17th, 2024, she released the song. On August 6, 2024, she performed “BLACK & WHITE” live at Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy, preceding the Juventus vs. Juventus Next Gen match. Scola also made the song “Wow” with the Juventus players, and released it on May 31st under her name as well as Beachcrimes’.

On April 19, 2024, Scola released her last single through Warner Chappell Music, “Summer ‘08.” Scola and Ryan McMahon founded their own independent record company, Whatever Records, in March 2023, and continue to release music through the label. On August 16-17 of 2024, Beachcrimes played their first festival at the Breakaway Music Festival in Michigan.

Influences

Growing up, Scola cited Billy Joel, Shania Twain, and Top 40 pop as major influences. She has also expressed admiration for Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Madonna, and Taylor Swift. Scola points to her mom as her inspiration.
