The Stable Theater was founded under the direction of Jonathan Daly as a 30 seat experimental theater located at 6560 Hollywood Blvd.[1][2] The troupe was known as the Stable Players and performed Daly's original creations.[3][4] Concurrently, while working on the television show CPO Sharkey, Daly would go to The Stable Theater after a day of shooting and stay late into the night, often returning home after midnight to continue writing into the early morning.[3]

Among works created for The Stable Theater, Daly wrote the well noted play A Good Look at Boney Kern starring Don Knotts.[4] This play was outside of Knott's usual roles and later travelled to the East Coast, debuting at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope Pennsylvania.[4] Knotts who stated that Daly had created the part almost specifically for him due to the physical similarities between himself and the character starred opposite Bob Frank of "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" fame, and Belinda Belaski when it debuted on the East Coast.[5]

Another acclaimed work created by Daly for The Stable Theater was 1982's The William which follows the title character's involvement in the lives of the tenants of an apartment building where he takes up residence.[6][7][8] The William featured well known television actress June Lockhart as Lucille and actor Clete Keith in the lead role, it later premiered in Pennsylvania at the Pocono Playhouse in 1984 .[8] Clete Keith was honored with a Drama Logue Award for Best Actor for his depiction.[9] This play was relaunched in Burbank in 1993 by Stable Players alumnus, and previous lead player on The William, Clete Keith, who's sister and mother had also been Stable Players in the late 1960s and early 1970s.[7]

Other notable projects by Daly for The Stable include Spoken Dreams Before the Mourning, The Jericho Killing, and Simons Ark, the last of which was later successfully staged at the Montgomery Theater in Souderton, Pennsylvania.
