Draft:The National African Students Association

The National African Students 'Association -NASA is a national, independent and non- politically students' association in Namibia founded on 17 March 2019 in Rundu by the students from the University of Namibia who believed that there was a need to create an alternative students' union from the only existing Namibia National Students Organization which by that time was experiencing internal fights, allegations of it's leaders being used by politicians and misuse of the allocated union funds.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

NASA presented itself as a reliable and an independent student association to many students in Namibia since its formation in 2019 and advocated for access to education, student Funding reforms and democratization and decolonization of learning institutions in Namibia. In 2019, the student association led a mass national demonstration against the slow issuing of student NSFAF cards by bank Windhoek and demanded for immediate payment of students tuition and non-tuitions by NSFAF.[7]

The association advocates for increments of students funding, speedy awarding of students loans and earlier payment of non-tuitions fee.[8][9][10][11]

The association adopted a resolution to advocate for a student Funding for all students in Namibia and in 2019, led a United Student Movements that staged a demonstration against the Minister of higher Education, Training and Innovation- Namibia, Hon. Utah Kandji-Murangi and Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) in which students demanded for an inclusive students funding policy, payment of tuition and non tuition fees and accountability of students funds.[12][13][14]

And in 2022, in its elective and policy congress took a resolution that students non-tuitions fee be paid on a monthly basis rather than quarterly payments to allow students cater for monthly expenses such as accommodation, food and transport and following negotiations between NSFAF and NASA, NSFAF announced that from 2023 Students non-tuitions fee will be paid on monthly basis.[15][16][17]

In 2021, the association led a demonstration against the University of Namibia managements demanding for a special registration to allow self funded to register for free and demanded for good governance.[18][19]

In 2021, opposed the decision by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to suspend and rewrite of the NSSCO/H Grade 11 and 12 National examination after a reported leakage of examination question paper at a private school in Oshana region.[20]

In 2020, NASA opposed the decision by the University of Namibia and Ministry of education, arts and culture to migrate to online learning after the outbreak of COVID-19 until all students receives internet connections and gadgets such as laptops and tablets, proposing for extension of education calendar and face to face classes for practical modules.[21][22]

The association also advocates for a well resourced education at both levels and fight against any form of discrimination towards students. In 2023, the association shutdown the Nursing Training Institute of Technology (NTIT) in Kavango East after scamming students register unaccredited courses and giving fake promises of giving students scholarship when they register.[23][24][25]

The association opposes the uncontrollable Voluntary parental contributions imposed by the ministry of education as it compromises the right to Education and instead proposes that the ministry puts sealings on how much schools can charge as voluntary contributions and opposes the redusal to register students whose parents cannot afford to pay voluntary parental contributions.[26]
