The Mechanisms were an Oxford based band created in 2010, originally as the backing band for Doctor Carmilla.[1] The band consisted of up to nine members, Jonny d'Ville, Ashes O'Reilly, Drumbot Brian, Gunpowder Tim, Raphaella la Cognizi, Marius Von Raum, Ivy Alexandria, Nastya Rasputina and The Toy Soldier.[2]

Between 2010 and 2020, they released four concept albums, two compilation albums and an additional single aswell as a live album that depicted the crews death.Their concept albums took folklore or fairytales and placed them in a dystopian or sci-fi setting, while their compilation albums would depict standalone stories including the backstories of the crew members.

Concept edit

The Mechanisms were both a fictional crew of immortal space pirates that traveled through space performing songs and a real band that existed between 2010 and 2020.

Each member, with the potential exception of Raphaella la Cognizi and Marius Von Raum[3], were mechanised in a surgical process that rendered them effectively immortal by Doctor Carmilla. In most cases this was the replacement of an organ or body part, in Drumbot Brians case it was his entire body and in Nastya Rasputinas it was her blood. It was later revealed that this immortality would come to an end.[1]

Members of the band performed under stage names that in turn were their own character, each with a backstory and a role as part of the crew. All members were portrayed by named actors/musicians, with the exception of Nastya Rasputina who's actor remains anonymous.

Members edit

The Mechanisms consisted of up to nine members at any given time. Each member had their own role in the band and on The Aurora.

Gunpowder Tim - Gunner. Living sometime in Earths distant future, the reign of Queen George VII, he was sent to war on the moon. After his friend Berties death he went on a rampage that resulted in him blowing up the moon[9]. His mechanism is his eyes. In performances he sings and plays the guitar.[10]
