The Harbour School (THS) is an international school[1] located in Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong. Founded in 2007, the school serves kindergarten, middle, and high school students across two campuses. It is an international school that follows the American curriculum. The school provides education for over 300 students representing more than 25 nationalities.

History

edit

The first The Harbour School campus was established in 2007 in Kennedy Town with 7 students. In 2009, the school moved to its main campus at Kennedy Town Centre with 75 students.

THS gained accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 2013 and in 2015 won their bid for a permanent government building (later established as "The Grove" campus). The first Ap Lei Chau campus, "The Garden", opened in the fall of 2015 with 14 classrooms and 226 students.

In the fall of 2017, THS opened the second Ap Lei Chau campus, "The Grove" for primary students from grades 1 through 6.

The Head of School is Dr. Jadis Blurton.[2][3] In May 2021, THS was awarded the Hong Kong International School of the Year, Best School[4] - Humanities and Social Studies, and Best Technology Program at the Hong Kong Living Education Awards. THS won Best Teaching and Learning at the ISC International School Awards in 2022[5]. In 2024, THS partnered with Ocean Park[6] to provide students with opportunities to expand their exposure to sustainability issues.

Curriculum

edit

The Harbour School follows an American common core curriculum that has been adapted to be consistent with both American and British standards within the United States and internationally.

Currently, math, reading, and writing are taught as well as science, history, and arts with an experiential learning approach[7]. The high school follows an American based Carnegie credit system and students receive a U.S. high school diploma. The Advanced Placement program is also available for high school students.

The average student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1.

Facilities

edit

The Harbour School offers two campuses.

The Grove is a 6000m2 building that features award winning[8][9][10]facilities that help further support The Harbour school's interdisciplinary experiential learning[11][12]approach including three Centres of Excellence[10]:

  • Marine Science Centre[13]
  • The Foundry
  • Black Dolphin (THS sailboat)[14][3]

The Garden campus is a modern learning space designed for high school students.
