Draft:The Act (art journal)

The Act[1] was an important art journal that published original experimental art & performance art work as well as theoretical and critical work. The journals importance was recognized through the importance of the authors who submitted their work for publication (without pay) and by the multiple rounds of funding the journal received from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)[2] [3] and the New York State Council for the Art (NYSCA)[4][5][6][7][8][9]. As stated in the New York State funding summary: “Among those supported were theoretical journals such as October[10]; High Performance and The Act, magazines which provide a context and criticism for contemporary performance…"[11]. The Act was also funded by prestigious private granters including, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts[12], with John Cage on the grant committee.

The Act was published between 1985 to 1991 and contained work from artists and academics focused on performance art, happenings, social practice, life-art, theater practice, and non-audience oriented performance. The journal is being preserved online for free access to its articles on the Web[13].
