Terry Knickerbocker (born February 2, 1956) is an acting teacher, actor coach, and Founder and Studio Director of the Terry Knickerbocker Studio, the Meisner acting school located in Brooklyn in New York City. He coaches many of the best-known actors in the world on their film, television, and theatre productions.

Among the actors whom he has coached are the following: Sacha Baron Cohen,[1] Leslie Bibb,[2] Austin Butler,[3] Josh Charles,[4] Abbie Cornish,[5] Daniel Craig,[6] Zac Efron,[7] Michael Godere,[8] Tony Goldwyn,[9] Boyd Holbrook,[10] Darius Homayoun,[11] Ana Isabelle,[12] John Leguizamo,[13] Natasha Lyonne,[14] Julia Mayorga,[15] Chris Messina,[16] Gretchen Mol,[17] Dylan O'Brien,[18] Brian Michael Smith,[19] Sam Rockwell,[20] Emmy Rossum,[21] Jurnee Smollett,[22] Jordana Spiro,[23] Michelle Williams,[24] and Yul Vasquez.[25]

Especially notable performances for which Terry has provided coaching include the following: Austin Butler on his role as Feyd Rautha Harkonnen in the film Dune: Part 2,[26] which Steven Spielberg has called “one of the most brilliant sci-fi films I’ve ever seen;”[27] Austin Butler and Boyd Holbrook as bikeriders in “The Bikeriders, the film by Jeff Nichols that has been called “one of the most visually exciting and poignant films of the year;”[28] Daniel Craig in his first three post-James Bond roles: Benoit Blanc in the film “Glass Onion,”[29] Macbeth in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”[30] on Broadway, and Lee in the adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s literary classic “Queer,”[31] directed by Luca Guadagnino; Natasha Lyonne in her Emmy-nominated role as Charlie Cale in both seasons of “Poker Face,” Rian Johnson’s first television series; Sam Rockwell on his Academy Award-winning performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri[32] and his Screen Actors Guild Award-winning performance in the television mini-series Fosse/Verdon[33]; Michelle Williams on her Emmy Award-winning, Golden Globe Award-winning, and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning performance in Fosse/Verdon,[34] and Emmy Rossum on 110 episodes of the television series Shameless.[35]

Education

Knickerbocker is a graduate of the Experimental Theatre Wing in the Drama Department at New York University.[36] He subsequently trained as an actor and a teacher with William Esper.[37] Other essential teachers/mentors include Maggie Flanigan, Rina Yerushalmi, Steve Wangh, Terry Hayden, Nikos Psacharopoulos, Jackie Brookes, Mary Overlie, Ryszard Cieslak, Jerzy Grotowski, Pierre Lefèvre, Moshe Feldenkrais, Dr. Louis Ormont, and Dr. Harry Fogarty.[38]

Career

For 25 years (from 1990 to 2015), Knickerbocker was a full-time faculty member of The William Esper Studio, where he taught the Meisner technique.[39] From 1986 to 2001, he was also an adjunct faculty member of the Experimental Theatre Wing in the Undergraduate Drama Department at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts – teaching both acting and directing. From 2002 to 2019, he was a full-time member of the core faculty of the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU, teaching acting.

He has also taught directing at the Playwrights Horizons Theatre School and has directed and advised projects at Yale University.[40] He has conducted workshops or master classes in acting in Canada and India.

In 2015, he founded the Terry Knickerbocker Studio, where he is Studio Director and Senior Acting Teacher. He is one of 30 faculty members at the Studio,[41] who teach aspiring actors as well as established actors who are continuing to refine their craft. He teaches the Meisner technique and is part of a direct lineage of Sanford Meisner, having spent more than 30 years training and teaching with William Esper, one of Meisner’s most respected protégés.

Knickerbocker has also coached actors on more than 800 films, television shows, and plays. In addition, he consults with playwrights and screenwriters on their scripts.

Knickerbocker’s directing credits include many new works as well as contemporary and classical plays such as Measure for Measure, Tartuffe, The Normal Heart, Candida, All My Sons, and David Rabe’s In the Boom Boom Room. He has directed productions at the American Place Theatre, Circle Repertory Company, New York University, Yale University, and the 92nd Street Y, among other theater producers.[42]

Personal Life

Knickerbocker lives with his wife and two children in Brooklyn, NY.

Awards

Knickerbocker is a recipient of the Drama League of New York’s directing award/fellowship for emerging directors.[43] He is also a former member of Circle Rep’s LAB.[44]
